Installing luxury vinyl plank flooring (LVP) on your stairs can drastically improve the look of your home’s interior. LVP flooring is among the most practical and classy ways to enhance any staircase. This guide explains how to install LVP on stairs for a beautiful and lasting outcome.STEP 1: CHOOSE AN LVP DESIGN, AND PREPARE YOUR STAIRS
When selecting your LVP, look for a style that complements your other interior features, such as gray cabinets. A well-considered LVP design will optimize the aesthetic appearance of your living space.
Once you’ve decided on your new LVP, start prepping your stairs. For a stable base, repair or tighten up loose and squeaky steps. Clean the stairs thoroughly to eliminate any dust or residue. Both can affect adhesive performance if you’re not using floating LVP.
STEP 2: MEASURE AND CUT THE VINYL PLANKS
Accurately measure each stair’s width and depth to determine the size of your LVP. If you choose a floating LVP system, the manufacturer will recommend accounting for a small expansion gap at the edges.

Use these precise measurements to cut your vinyl planks to size. A sharp utility knife or fine-toothed saw works best for making clean, straight cuts.

Start the installation at the bottom of the staircase and work your way up. For floating LVP products, align the first plank at the base of the first step, confirming that it’s square and level.
Now, press down firmly to position the plank against the tread and riser. The extra pressure allows your locking system to snap into place securely. Continue this process step by step while checking the alignment and fitment of each piece before moving on to the next one.
STEP 4: ADD STAIR NOSING
Unless your vinyl stair treads come with built-in nosing, it’s time to finish the edges with it. Nosing is a piece of trim on the top edge of each stair that creates a more polished look, makes the staircase safer, and reduces wear on the steps’ edges from high traffic.

Measure and cut each piece of nosing to fit the width of your steps. Now, attach the nosing according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Usually, this involves securing it with adhesive or small nails.
STEP 5: APPLY ADHESIVE FOR NON-FLOATING LVP
If your LVP installation requires adhesive, remember to source the appropriate product. Start applying it at the bottom of your staircase by slowly introducing a thin, even layer of adhesive on each step with a notched trowel.
Verify that it covers the entire surface area where you’ll be setting the planks.
Don’t over-apply the adhesive when arranging them. Allow the product to set for the manufacturer’s recommended time before laying down the new vinyl. A strong bond will prevent your planks from shifting over time.

After the vinyl planks are securely in place, inspect each step for any overhanging edges or irregular fits that might need trimming. Use a sharp utility knife to make any necessary adjustments, ensuring each plank lines up perfectly with the edges of the stairs.
As with our Stonecreek cabinetry installations, you’ll likely need to correct for minute measurement discrepancies. Trimming lets you do this to maintain the integrity and appearance of your new staircase flooring.
STEP 7: FINAL INSPECTION AND CLEANING
After installing all the vinyl planks and completing the necessary trimming, thoroughly inspect your staircase. Check for gaps, misalignments, or loose edges and adjust accordingly.
Lastly, remove any installation debris, dust, and excess adhesive. Use a soft cloth or mop with a cleaner suitable for vinyl flooring to wipe down the steps. This will reveal the good looks of your newly installed LVP while preparing the surface for immediate foot traffic.
